Orbital Fabrications is proud to have over 30 years’ experience in supplying the medical and pharmaceutical industries. It is highly important to us, especially during these most difficult times, to be able to assist our clients in the fight against Covid-19.

Orbital’s facilities include fully equipped and certified cleanrooms, class 5 and 6 and clean areas suitable for welding, assembly, packaging and testing.

So, what is a cleanroom?

Our cleanrooms are designed for undertaking work requiring the highest levels of cleanliness, upon completion each product is individually bagged and sealed, ensuring that it reaches you in the same environment as it leaves our cleanroom. Our engineers are trained to work to the highest clean room standards and adhere to the strictest codes of practice.

What are the functions of a cleanroom?

A cleanroom has many different functions and is an essential environment for production across various industries. Orbital Fabrications cleanrooms are used for welding, assembly and manufacture within a calibrated and controlled environment. They are also used for leak testing within the same environment, ensuring no compromise of the product.

The cleanrooms are also used for component packing and assembly, ensuring that the product reaches the customer with the same level of cleanliness as it was manufactured with. Quality inspections are also completed within the cleanroom environment.

Why are cleanrooms so important?

Cleanrooms are essential within industries where a high level of control is needed during the process of manufacture.

In industries where small particles can interfere in the manufacturing process, cleanrooms are used to prevent against contamination first and foremost, they are also used to control humidity, temperature and pressure to ensure the quality of the product.

The air that circulates through a cleanroom is specially filtered so that particles over 0.3 microns are filtered out.

Which industries benefit from using cleanrooms?

Industries in which manufacturing involves an exact science will always need a cleanroom facility. Some examples of this are;

  • Pharmaceutical
  • Medical Device
  • Optics
  • University Labs & Research Facilities
  • Biological Safety

These industries rely on cleanrooms to ensure that the products they receive are entirely sterile and cannot cause illness or disease to the end user. In recent months, we have all become increasingly aware of the importance of avoiding cross contamination.

This type of controlled environment has a low level of pollutants such as dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles, and chemical vapors. Staff working in cleanrooms undergo extensive training in contamination control theory. They enter and exit the cleanroom through airlocks, air showers and gowning rooms. They must wear special clothing designed to trap contaminants that are naturally generated by skin and the body.

Cleanrooms are awarded different classification levels dependent on the level of cleanliness needed. Some lower-class cleanrooms require the operatives to wear aprons and masks, some higher levels require full protective equipment. This depends on what is being manufactured and higher levels are usually used for the medical and pharmaceutical industries to ensure that the end user is getting the best quality product and that risk to their health is drastically minimised.

Cleanrooms are put through rigorous testing to establish the purity and sterility of the environment.
